Compassion hurts. When you feel connected to everything, you also feel responsible for everything. And you cannot turn away. Your destiny is bound with the destinies of others. You must either learn to carry the universe or be crushed by it. You must grow strong enough to love the world, yet empty enough to sit down at the same table with its worst horrors.
I get this, but being loving and compassionate doesn’t have to hurt. I used to get overwhelmed by other people’s struggles. The key is to cultivate the technique of being detached. It’s a process, but it’s necessary for your own survival. It’s like being in a life boat and seeing another person drowning and rather than tossing them a line to bring them to safety, you jump in and start drowning with them. That’s not helping. We can be compassionate without drowning. It’s a skill worth mastering.(via dontjimmymejules)
